Attention Acne Sufferers: Two Beverages That May Sabotage Your Acne Clearing Efforts. Part Two

For some people, alcohol is a major contributing factor to acne flares; like coffee, it upsets the equilibrium balance in your body and forces the liver to work “overtime” in ridding itself of toxins. It is not to imply that every person who drinks alcohol will form acne because that is not true for all; every individual is different as some people can drink alcohol everyday and never develop acne. It may seem unfair, but the underlying reason is that we all manifest body imbalances differently, i.e. not every overweight person has high blood pressure, whereas a thin person (who has approximately the same health level as an overweight person) may form high blood pressure.

This advice is solely for people who have acne problems and drink alcohol (though moderation is advised for non-acne sufferers as well). A sound strategy is to take a week away from all forms of liquor to see what changes happen to your skin; a wonderful substitute is green or white tea (decaffeinated and preferably organic). If it is difficult to completely remove it after trying the substitute, then reduce your quantities by at least sixty percent or more, if possible. If you have clear skin, but have had moderate to severe acne in the past, and really love a glass of red wine, it is not problematic to have a glass with your dinner periodically. It is not necessary for current acne sufferers to give up wine (or alcohol) forever, only temporarily, and when you are clear, you may slowly incorporate it back into your lifestyle. The only way to know for sure if alcohol is detrimental to your skin’s health is to test it by removing it temporarily to see what happens. In addition to this information, it may prove to be beneficial to know how to recognize if a person may have dangerous amounts of alcohol in his or her system; these simple tell-tell signs will help you gauge if you should call for help (911), which may save a person’s life in the future. The signs include:

A. Chilly maybe moist, pale, or bluish skin (examine under the eyelids).

B. Faint, fast pulse.

C. Abnormal breathing.

D. The person can not be provoked.

Cheers,

Angela P.

Excellent question, Fiorucci. I have not tested it to know for sure, but it will depend on the person as we all have different genetic makeups that allow some people to “get away” with consuming alcohol and never having any breakouts, and some people will break out ferociously.

An easy solution is to test it for yourself as stated in the blog. Remove it for a few days to a week and see if any changes occur. Or, take notice to when you drink alcohol; do you notice spots to appear a day after? Two days after? What happens when you remove it and then drink it again? Take notes and write them down somewhere where you won’t lose it. It is a good idea to note quantities and types of alcohol in the journal as well, i.e. Two 8 ounces of red wine, etc.

Doing this trial and error will allow you to know for sure if it is alcohol that causes those spots from time to time.

    I hope this helps!~

Hi, I was wondering what the reason for leaving out creamers or artificial sweeteners? Are they bad for skin as well as caffine and alcohol? I drink coffee a lot, and have never thought about it before, but it does seem like when I use creamers instead of straight cream and sugar that is does make me break out more. Also, sometimes when I put creamer in, the first sips taste like actual alcohol. It is like the flavor of a mudslide blended drink. Do creamers contain the same things as alcohol that are bad for skin?

    Hello Michelle~

    Excellent questions.

    1. The reason for leaving out creamers or artificial sweeteners is because from my trials and research, they are contributing factors to imbalances in the body and may result in blotchy/acne containing skin. I used to be a huge diet soda fan and there were noticeable differences in my skin when I stopped drinking them and then when I started back drinking them. They are detrimental to the skin like caffeine and alcohol, again for some people; the key is to test it for a while and see if you notice any changes.

You just correlated it for yourself with the difference with straight cream and sugar verses the artificial versions :) It’s one of those kind of things where you would not think that something as insignificant as a small amount of creamer could break you out.

Interesting that you noticed the taste of creamers comparable to alcohol. Hmm, I am not sure why it tastes similar to alcohol, but I suspect that it is the mixture of coffee with it that produces a similar flavor. Non-dairy artificial creamers do not contain similar ingredients as alcohol, but I suspect with alcohol that since it is taxing on the liver, it may contribute to acne for some people. Whereas, with creamers, they tend to have hydrogenated oils (which are bad for health overall), corn syrup, sugar, carrageenan, and a whole other host of artificial ingredients that may be taxing on the liver as well. So, that may be the correlation.
